The axillary nerve wraps around the surgical neck of the humerus, and therefore it can be damaged if a fracture occurs in this area. The axillary nerve can also be damaged by using crutches incorrectly and by dislocating the humerus from the glenohumeral joint. Severe damage to this nerve can result in atrophy of the deltoid muscle.
