Hepatocellular carcinoma in the setting of hemachromatosis

  • cells arranged in nests +/- bile plugs
  • increased number of cells in a plate (usually one notices a single-file row of hepatocytes - this becomes multiple cells with hepatocellular carcinoma)
  • nuclear atypia
  • hemochromatosis - presence of hemosiderin granules within hepatocytes
