A Computer Based Learning Module for General Psychiatry

Michael Colon, MSIV

Dear Student, I am a fourth year medical student at the University of Connecticut school of Medicine doing research as a part of a project required for graduation. The principle investigator for this study is Dr. Catherine Lewis. The title of this study is A Computer Based Learning Module for General Psychiatry

The main goal of this selective project is to develop an interactive computer based module aiding 3rd year medical students in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of schizophrenia. Students will take part in 3 interactive cases involving psychiatric patients. The tutorial will teach students how to accurately assess and diagnose an acutely psychotic patient, how to classify the different forms of schizophrenia, and how to further treat and manage these patients. Students will also be directed to online resources that can further enhance their knowledge and understanding of various psychiatric topics that are addressed throughout the tutorial.

You are invited to participate in this study. Your participation is voluntary. If you choose to participate, please complete the pre-tutorial survey. While complete surveys will provide better data, you may skip any questions that you do not feel comfortable answering. Your response to these questions should take between 10-20 minutes to complete. After completion, please press the submit button and continue on to the computer based module that will take about 30 minutes; then there will be a post tutorial questionnaire using the same questions also taking about 10-20 minutes. Completion and return of this survey signifies your consent to participate in the study.

I appreciate your participation in this research study. For any questions regarding this study please feel free to e-mail me at, or call the principle investigator at 860-679-8395. Thank you.

Please use Internet Explorer as the tutorial does not operate correctly on Google Chrome or Firefox. Thank you.

Please complete the pre-tutorial questionnaire first. You may then proceed through the online case-based tutorial, and upon completion, close the window to return to this page. You may then complete the post-tutorial questionnaire.

Please create a unique code that includes the first 3 letters of your street name plus the last 3 letters of your favorite color to allow the pre-tutorial questionnaire to be linked to the post-tutorial questionnaire answers for statistical analysis. For example, if your street name is Farmington Avenue and your favorite color is blue, your login would be far+blu=farblu. By creating this code, the tests will not be linked to you as an individual. Please do not type any identifiable information in the space below.

Thank you.
